Notes from the Director: Welcome to the Ashe County Inspection Department news letter. Permits this year have been going out at a record pace, so it looks like building will be strong for another year
Building: The new codes are due out sometime this year, and as soon as they get out we will start to go over the changes and hopefully will get these on to you. One thing we get a lot of questions about is attic and crawl space access. Attic access should have a rough framed opening of 22” by 30” and shall be located in a hallway or other readily accessible location. Crawl spaced access shall be a minimum 18” by 24” opening, also see the Mechanical code.
Electrical: Boxes behind light fixtures is one thing we should not need to talk about, it seems this is something that I run in to quite often. So please be sure that all your lights have boxes. On this same subject metal boxes must be guarded by and approved method and not by a sheet metal screw or one of the mounting screws
Plumbing: Article 708 in the plumbing code address cleanouts, 708.3.3. states that one cleanout shall be required for every four 45 degree changes located in series. Article 708.8 states that on 6” and smaller pipes shall be provided with a clearance of not less than 18” for rodding.
Mechanical: Fuel-fired appliances shall not be located in, or obtain combustion air from, any of the following rooms or spaces: 1. sleeping rooms 2. Bathrooms 3. Toilet rooms 4. Storage closets 5. Surgical rooms. There are some exceptions 1. Direct-vent appliances that obtain all combustion air directly from the outdoors. 2. Solid fuel fired appliances, provided that the room is not a confined space and the building is not of unusually tight construction 3. Appliances installed in a dedicated enclosure in which all combustion air is taken directly from the outdoors
